It’s TIme to Speak Up

Message from a Member - Cary Kelly

I have been involved in public service for my entire adult life.  In 1965 I was activated in the United States Marine Corps and deployed to Vietnam as an infantry officer, later becoming a Naval Aviator.  I retired from active duty as a colonel in 1993 after 5 years in the reserves and 28 years of active duty.

After arriving in Sandpoint in 1993, I worked for the Bonner County Sheriff's Office for the next 18 years.   I then served as a Bonner County Commissioner for 4 years, and then was elected as a trustee for Lake Pend Oreille School District for 4 and a half years.

I see Idaho, as well as the rest of the country, becoming more divided. Now is the time to speak up before it gets worse and leads to violence.  We must work together to fix our problems, and fortunately we have  the Constitution and 247 years of history to fall back on.

Bonner County and Idaho have been such a perfect place for our children and grandchildren to grow up. I am continually impressed by how friendly and generous people are here.  For example, several months ago I had car trouble and pulled off to the side of the road.  So many cars stopped to help me that they were creating a traffic jam.  This is a great place to live and we need to work together to preserve our values of kindness and respect to keep it that way.

The Community Speaks Out and Makes a Difference

A group of parents in the West Bonner School District weren’t happy with the direction their school district was taking. By channeling their frustration into constructive action, they made a difference for the kids and families in their community.

From Idaho Ed News, “West Bonner Parents Say they Saved Their School District”

PRIEST RIVER — What did you do last summer? A group of mothers and grandmothers in tiny Priest River proudly responds, “We saved a school district.”

It was a relentless and months-long effort that included hundreds of home visits and thousands of phone calls.

But a core group of 10 — with a hundred more participating — led an implausible community campaign to recall two members of the West Bonner County School District’s board of trustees.

And they did so with resounding voter turnout and lopsided results.
