Standing up Against Extremism and POlitical Violence
Standing up Against Extremism and Political Violence - Mayor Jim Hammond
On October 31, leaders from across Idaho gathered to honor Coeur d’Alene Mayor Jim Hammond with our inaugural Pillar of Idaho award. Bill Shawver, Idaho Leaders United board member, introduced Hammond by discussing the 2022 Patriot Front event and noting that he "played a pivotal role in preventing what could have been a tragic day of violence. His continued commitment to the safety and unity of his community embodies Idaho Leaders United's mission and purpose."
"Events like this are crucial because they bring together people who are willing to stand up to extremism and the vocal minority that resorts to violence to achieve their ends," Mayor Hammond said. "It is up to all of us, as proud Idahoans, to defend our fellow citizens from prejudice and political violence."
The Coeur d’Alene Press released an editorial following our event highlighting the work of ILU and echoing our support for Mayor Hammond:
“Jim Hammond represents the very best kind of leader. He speaks softly and respectfully. He’s as intelligent as he is religiously devout. He exudes kindness but won’t be bullied or let those in his sphere of influence be bullied, either. As an appellation, Pillar of Idaho fits Jim Hammond perfectly.”
Extremism was on the Ballot - and Lost
During the November 7 election, residents of Idaho united to collectively reject extremism across the state. For example, in the Meridian mayoral race, the incumbent Robert Simison emerged victorious with 70 percent of the vote against Mike Hon, who was responsible for leading the charge to dissolve the Meridian Library District. "I'm happy with the direction that the community thinks that we're going," Simison said Tuesday night. "And I think that the results are proving that the community is not interested in having extremist representation at the city level."
